Active Release Therapy (ART) is a non-invasive manual therapy technique that focuses on soft tissue that has built up scar tissue. Built-up scar tissue ultimately causes soft tissue restrictions resulting in mobility issues and pain. The goal of ART is to break down scar tissue and adhesions in order to optimize function in the body.
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. Your ART provider will use their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, and movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, and ligaments. If scar tissue is present, your ART provider will be able to feel it because it will be preventing soft tissues from moving properly. This can cause reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and even pain. If nerve tissue is trapped, there may be tingling, numbness, and weakness as well.
